Small Stream Fly
Fly Fishing On Fall River In Central Oregon

This show was particularly memorable. Scott Linden does a marvelous job of instruction on flycasting along these two wonderful little streams. It was only about a half hours drive between the two streams each as different as night and day.

The fabled Deschutes springs to life from a series of small fissures and it’s host lake, Little Lava Lake. It is clear and clean as it chases through the woods bound for the Columbia a hundred miles to the north. At its headwaters it is a classic trout stream complete with woody debris, undercuts, tall grass-lined banks and thick shade branches. It’s truly magical.

Scott got me started with a strike indicator he’d fashioned from a Corkie and a size 14 gold-ribbed hare’s ear nymph. He on the otherhand took to casting a small PMD dry. We both caught several small brook trout.

Scott who has occasion to visit this stretch of water regularly has turned some trophy browns that lurk under the prime undercuts right in the path of easy meals.

In the afternoon we switched gears and spent our time on the beautiful Fall River. This is a gin clear stream that is an easily fished premium flyfishing getaway. There’s lots of small trout but plenty of big browns to keep your attention.

We watched a gentleman who was clearly familiar with the river, hook, land and release a brown trout that was probably 18” and 3 pounds or more in weight.

The same patterns we used on the Deschutes worked on the Fall.
