Fly Fishing On Crooked River In Oregon
From Prineville Reservoir’s Bowman Dam begins 8 miles of some of the finest native rainbow trout fishing to be found anywhere. This section of the Crooked River is a food factory loaded with a year around supply of insect life that feeds the thousands of trout each river mile.
It’s not renowned as a trophy trout fishery though fish to 3 pounds or more are available. It is a quality fishery though, and perfect for the beginning fly enthusiast looking for a confidence-builder. Seasoned anglers will enjoy the quality of the fish and the setting that are perfectly matched to 4 weight rods and an assortment of size 14 gold-ribbed hare’s ear nymphs, some brassies, chronomids and an assortment of small dries ranging from PMD’s and Adams to humpy patterns and mayflies.
One of the attractions of the Crooked River is the constant water temperature that maintains an optimum river quality for year around fishing. Some of the best fishing on this river occurs in the dead of winter and early spring. Our trip was in early summer and it was outstanding, with consistent fishing all day long.
Make sure to check the current sport fishing regulations before wetting a line.
