Tips: With steelhead, sturgeon, bass and walleye in the area we were fishing we set-out to shoot our most ambitious show ever. Our goal was to catch all four species. We had a couple chances for steelhead that we missed, landed a trophy walleye of 12 lbs., caught a nice bunch of scrappy smallmouth, and ran out of time on sturgeon.

Our guide, Jack Glass, is the acknowledged authority in the area and is regarded as one of the top guides in the region. Jack's knowledge of the river was essential because conditions were particularly tough. We talked to lots of other anglers who hadn't seen a fish for several days.

Most year's our timing would have been perfect for this grand slam but in 2000 it was apparent that a number of fisheries had been upset by floods years earlier and this one was no different.

We missed a couple walleye before connecting with the trophy we boated. Our walleye came on a trolled spinner and worm harness in less than 20' of water.

Berkley Frenzy crankbaits and Berkley power grubs in pink, white and avocado all paid off with catches of pounder smallmouth. I'm sure had we spent all of our time targeting bass we would have found some lunkers. Once we found fish the action was brisk…that's the Columbia River --- it's spread out and so are the fish.

There were lots of steelhead in the area, but for reasons unknown coaxing them into biting was tough at best.

This is one of those fisheries that when it's on it's really on…but like most seaons --- timing's everything.
